In 1996, the Basle municipality was awarded the Swiss Wakkerpreis (Wakker prize) for its exemplary maintenance of its urban design – the successful combination of preserving old structures and combining them with newly structured ones convinced the jury. The commitment of Basle’s architects and urban developers extends to the future to justify its reputation as a ”city with a special architectural culture”. 

In addition to the projects of famous architects a variety of works of other architects can also be found in the demicantons Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land. These architects meet the challenges in the areas of new construction, restoration, expansion and reconstruction in a very individual and creative way.
