Serving as gateways to the cities, train stations were the most important urban buil- ding developments at the turn of the 20th century. One century later this building mission is experiencing a fascinating renaissance. New facilities are emerging all over the world that need to fulfill a huge range of demands in terms of safety, comfort and functionality – for example today’s stations very often have to serve as shopping malls.

Even small facilities for regional trains, subways and trams belong to the past, if they are designed only for the purpose of traveling. And just like the larger stations they also have a crucial impact on the urban identity. 60 international projects were cho- sen to present current station architecture both in terms of long distance traffic as well as local transportation structures, above and below ground.
