"Architects and laypersons, fans of the Hansaviertel as well as skeptics of it, friends and critics of modern architecture and modern urban development, will all benefit from this book over and over again."

(Harald Bodenschatz)

The Hansaviertel section of the Berlin-Tiergarten district is a prime example of radical and comprehensive urban renewal of a bourgeois residential area of the imperial era. It is a manifestation of the postulates of modern architecture of light, air and sunshine, and the separation of living, working, relaxation and transport functions based on the Athens Charter. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, this book traces the creation of the new Hansaviertel as an architectural achievement of the Interbau 1957 and presents the residential policy, urban development and sociological discussions that surrounded this significant building exhibition. The individual buildings are expertly presented and accompanied by historical and contemporary illustrations and planning materials for documentation.
